Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When should I take my Coumadin®/warfarin?
A: In order for Coumadin®/warfarin to be effective, you should take your prescribed dosage at the same time every day. Medication use should be standard and consistent.
Q: What should I do if I miss a dose?
A: If you miss a dose of Coumadin®/warfarin, take a dose as soon as possible on the same day; but if you miss a day completely, then skip the missed dose and continue with your usual daily dose the next day. Do not take a double dose of Coumadin®/warfarin the next day to "catch up"; otherwise, you may end up having too much of the medication in your body. It is important that you tell your healthcare provider right away if you missed a dose of Coumadin®/warfarin.
Q: What should I do if I'm on Coumadin®/warfarin and I plan on having surgery?
A: Tell your doctor. Your doctor will discuss your condition with your surgeon. It is very important to confirm that your doctor and surgeon have communicated regarding your Coumadin®/warfarin therapy and upcoming surgery.
Q: What drugs interact with Coumadin®/warfarin?
A:Coumadin®/warfarin interacts with many drugs, including prescription and nonprescription (over the counter) drugs. For this reason, it is important for you to check with your health care provider before starting, changing, or stopping any drug. Vitamins and herbal supplements can also interact with Coumadin®/warfarin. Please check with your healthcare provider for additional information regarding potential drug-to-drug interactions that can occur while on Coumadin®/warfarin.
Q: Why do I need to have blood tests while on Coumadin®/warfarin?
A: While on Coumadin®/warfarin, it is important that you have PT/INR blood tests as scheduled. PT/INR tests check to see how fast your blood clots. Your Coumadin®/warfarin dosage will be adjusted to stay within your target INR range.
