Michigan and Colorectal Cancer
According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, Colorectal Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Michigan, with only lung cancer taking the lives of more men and women. Michigan, ranks 35th in the nation in colorectal cancer mortality with 16 states having a lower mortality rate.
CRC screenings are a covered benefit under Medicare Part B. One or more of the following tests may be covered.
- Fecal Occult Blood Test - Once every 12 months if age 50 or older. No cost to beneficiary.
- Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - Generally once every 48 months if age 50 or older, or
for those not at high risk, 120 months after a previous screening colonoscopy.
Beneficiary pays coinsurance. - Screening Colonoscopy - Generally once every 120 months (high risk every 24 months), or 48 months after a previous Flexible Sigmoidoscopy. No minimum age requirement. Beneficiary pays coinsurance.
- Barium Enema - Once every 48 months if age 50 or older (high risk every 24
months) when used instead of a Sigmoidoscopy or Colonoscopy. Beneficiary
pays coinsurance.
MPRO encourages physicians’ offices to promote that patients schedule CRC screenings, a covered benefit(s) under Medicare Part B.
