Breast Cancer Screening
Michigan and Breast Cancer
According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Michigan. It is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Michigan women. Early detection is the key to survival. With regular screening, breast cancer is more likely to be detected at an earlier stage, when it is most treatable. The five-year survival rate among women whose breast cancer has not spread beyond the breast at the time of diagnosis is 98.0%.
For women with Medicare Part B, mammograms are a covered service. Screening mammograms are covered once every 12 months for all women with Medicare age 40 and older. Medicare covers one baseline mammogram for women between age 35 and 39. Beneficiaries pay coinsurance.
MPRO encourages physicians’ offices to promote a yearly mammogram which is a covered benefit under Medicare Part B.
